The Asaba party announced in Bishkek on 22 October that Deputy of Parliament Azimbek Beknazarov was elected chairman of the party at the congress held in the town of Shamaldy-Sai of the southern Jalal-Abad Province on 19 October. Former chairman of the party Doelet Nusupov was elected head of the co-ordination council of the party.
The party was founded in 1990. Beknazarov is chairman of a parliamentary committee, he began impeachment procedure against President Askar Akayev last December accusing him of ceding Kyrgyz territories to China. He was arrested on 5 January and released on 19 March only. However, his arrest caused broad public protests, which led to death of one protester in February and killing of five protesters in March.
