BISHKEK. Today the president of Russia Vladimir Putin arrived in Bishkek for a one-day visit. President of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akayev and other top officials met him at the Manas airport. As RFE/RL correspondent in Bishkek reports, the two presidents had a meeting behind closed doors. Later Putin and Akayev attended a joint meeting of Kyrgyz-Russian officials. The Bishkek declaration, a security treaty and an agreement on restructuring Kyrgyzstan's debt to Russia were signed.
Putin also met with the chairmen of the both chambers of parliament.
In the first nine months of the current year, trade between Russia and Kyrgyzstan rose by 21%, compared to the same period of the last year and totalled 132 Ml. dollars.
