Human Rights Organization To Sue “Vecherniy Bishkek” Newspaper

BISHKEK. A human rights organization, the Kyrgyz Committee for Human Rights (KCHR) is considering suing the “Vecherniy Bishkek” newspaper. As a member of the KCHR, Mamasadyk Jakishev put it, the newspaper insulted the KCHR by publishing an article entitled “Some Human Rights Activists Are paid By the Opposition's Purse” on December 17, 2002. According to the article, the KCHR received some portion of 35,000 US$, allegedly allocated by the “Kazakhstan in the 21st Century” Foundation to destabilize Kyrgyzstan. Jakishev said that the accusation is baseless and the KCHR did not receive any money from the Foundation established by a former Kazakh prime minister.
