Deputy PM Rejects Accusation of MPs Over Experts Group

BISHKEK. The first deputy prime minister Kurmanbek Osmonov said today that the latest version of the constitutional amendments won't much differ from the draft that was prepared by the Constitutional Council and discussed nationwide. "The Experts Group, created by president Akayev, will only technically classify the suggestions and rewrite them according to jurisprudence rules" said Osmonov.
He was reacting to the statement of 10 members of the Constitutional Council on Jan. 10, which accused president Askar Akayev of violating the spirit of constructivism of the Constitutional Council's work and trying to change the Constitution "at his own will", by forming on Jan. 2 the Experts Group to work of the amendments.
Kurmanbek Osmonov said such an accusation is "groundless". He added that the members of the Constitutional Council will look at the latest version of the Constitution on Jan. 13.
In the meanwhile, the Chairwoman of the Constitutional Court of Kyrgyzstan Cholpon Bayekova said that it would be more appropriate to hold a referendum on the constitutional amendments in 2004. Originally suggested terms were the end of January or February this year. According to Bayekova, almost have of the Constitution will be affected by amendments for which at least half a year of work will be needed.
