President Akayev Says He Followed An Opposition Advice

BISHKEK. President Askar Akayev will vote at the No 1128 constituency in Bishkek on the Sunday’s referendum. The Presidential press service told journalists today that Akayev will meet with the local residents during the plebiscite. Yesterday, President Akayev met with the labor veterans and representatives of cultural institutions. According to the President, the Government followed an advice by some radical opposition leaders when a special clause about an inviolability of a (future) ex-president was included into the draft version of the Constitution. He did not elaborate who was an author of the initiative on the ex-president’s inviolability.

In accordance with a new presidential decree signed yesterday, pensions will be raised for 20 percent, starting April 1, 2003. Kyrgyz opposition criticized the move, saying that it was a disguised form of buying the electorate votes.
