BISHKEK. The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, will visit Kyrgyzstan on February 11. The press service of the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry's told journalists today that Scheffer will meet with President Askar Akayev, Prime Minister Nikolai Tanayev, Foreign Minister Askar Aitmatov and other officials to discuss human rights, ecology, the economy and other issues. It is not clear whether or not he will meet with leaders of the political parties and NGOs. The OSCE Bishkek office said that this issue will be clarified in nearest future.
The OSCE officially opened its Academy in Bishkek in December 2002. However, the organization refused to send international observers to the Sunday referendum, criticizing the timing as too short for the necessary organizational procedures needed to invite a team of observers to the country.
