BISHKEK. Several political parties and NGOs today held a meeting in commemoration of Sheraly Nazarkulov. He was an active human rights campaigner, economist and publicist who devoted his post-Soviet years to the democratization processes in the country. Nazarkulov died last year on February 7, while he had been participating at the hunger strike demanding to release an opposition lawmaker, Azimbek Beknazarov, detained by police in January 2002. Nazarkulov was at the strike from January 16 until his death. The participants of the commemoration meeting appealed to the authorities to name one of the capital streets after Nazarkulov.
