BISHKEK. An analyst of the independent ‘Aalam’ (‘Universe’) newspaper, Tologon Sulaimanov today was summoned by an investigator of the ministry of interior. Zoia Kojobekova, the investigator, said that Sulaimanov was one of the suspects in a case in connection with an attempted kidnapping. Sulaimanov was one of the independent observers during the referendum on February 2. He wrote an article in the ‘Aalam’ newspaper, criticizing shortcomings of the referendum procedures. Human rights campaigners criticize the case as a tool for the officials to discourage independent observers to publish their materials gathered during their observation.
An opposition lawmaker, and the leader of the ‘Atameken’ (‘Motherland’) Party, Omurbek Tekebayev, a leader of the headquarters of the ‘Arnamys’ (Dignity) Party, Emil Aliev and representative of the ‘Kyrgyzstan Democtratic Movement Party, Jypar Jekshe, had been already summoned by police on the case of kidnapping. They told RFE/RL that the case was politically motivated.
