BISHKEK. Several opposition politicians, including the leaders of the 'Arnamys', 'Respublica' and other parties and NGOs, told RFE/RL today that they will not participate at Thursday' gathering, the Kyrgyzstan People's Kurultai (Congress). One of the leaders of the 'Respublika' Party, Zamira Sydykova, told RFE/RL that the Kurultai is not a legitimate congress of the nation because only government supporters and representatives of local administrations were invited to it. The Kurultai was an initiative by the Kyrgyzstan Peoples' Assembly, a semi-official body for the ethnic groups in the country.
About 1110 delegates, including 650 representatives from all the regions of the country, were invited to the government-backed gathering. Today there were some public actions in support of the Kurultai in the Talas and Jalalabad regions.
