BISHKEK. President Askar Akayev today congratulated Kyrgyzstan women with the 8th of March, the International Day of Women. The celebration - officially recognized in Kyrgyzstan since the Soviet period - is one of the most popular celebrations in the country. A special party was held in the State Opera and Ballet Theater in Bishkek today. There were several traditional meetings, devoted to Women's Day, in different regions of the country.
According to some Central Asian experts, Kyrgyz women were one of the most advanced and liberated among the Muslim societies even before the atheist regime in the Soviet Union. However, even still now they have a lot of un-addressed human rights problems in Kyrgyzstan.
