Legislative Assembly Makes A Statement On Iraqi War


BISHKEK. The Legislative Assembly (lower chamber) of the Kyrgyz parliament made s statement on the Iraqi war today. The statement backed by the 32 lawmakers out of 40 participants of today's session, says that fighting against international terrorism is not be carried out with the same brutal methods as terrorists used. The signatories criticized the USA and Britain, as they put it, for beginning of the war against Iraq without approval by the UN's Security Council.
Meanwhile, dozens of students of Bishkek universities, mainly those who study at the Kyrgyz-American University, today marched through the old square in front of the Parliament building demanding to stop the war in Iraq.
Several NGOs and human rights campaigners are planning to organize a meeting in front of the American Embassy in Bishkek on Wednesday. Tursunbek Akun, a human rights campaigner, told RFE/RL today, that participants then will march towards the "Manas" airport where the international anti-terrorist coalition's Ganci airbase is situated.
