NGOs Are Eager To Learn President's Approach Towards Freedom of Assembly.

BISHKEK. The Coalition of NGOs for Democracy and Civil Society and some other NGOs and local human rights organizations sent an open letter to President A. Akayev on recent human rights abuses in the country, including prohibition of opposition gatherings and obstacles to peaceful protest marches in September-November. They criticized the Government for not guaranteeing basic human rights by limiting freedom of speech and freedom of movement. The authors of the letter asked the President to express his opinion on human rights issues. The NGOs said that the current governmental policy contradicts with the principles of OSCE's Bishkek Declaration signed in 2001.
