The Committee For Human Rights of the Legislative Assembly of the Parliament approved a list of candidates who will compete for the three positions of the Deputy Ombudsman. About 26 people are listed as candidates. Besides them, two contenders, Jalgap Kazakbayev and Omar Khmaladze refused to accept their nomination. One of the nominees is lawmaker Oksana Malevannaia.
It is expected that the Legislative Assembly will elect the Ombudsman's deputies next week.
Tursunbai Bakir-uulu, elected to the position of Ombudsman on November 21, 2002, has been one of the prominent moderate opposition politicians. He was a mediator for the Kyrgyz Government and the militants of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan during the hostage taking crisis in August - September 1999.
