A Movement entitled For the Resignation of President Askar Akayev and For Reforms In the Interests Of People will hold its Third gathering of the
Kyrgyzstan People before February 2. Members of the movement,
lawmakers Azimbek Beknazarov (leader of the ‘Asaba’ [Flag) National
Revival Party) and Bektur Asanov (leader of the ‘Erkin Kyrgyzstan’ (Free
Kyrgyzstan) Party) told RFE/RL today that there would be four main topics on the agenda. As they put it, the agenda consists of the ‘illegality’ of the
forthcoming referendum; the ‘unjust’ court process regarding the Aksy tragedy in March 2002; and other organizational issues. Kyrgyz authorities did not allow the Movement to hold the gathering on November 16, 2002, detaining and forcing more than 100 participants to go back to their residencies.
