Government Wraps-Up International Year of the Mountain


The Kyrgyz Government held a meeting today devoted to the results of the 2002 International Year of the Mountain Year, which was marked worldwide by initiatives of the Kyrgyz Government. President Askar Akayev, Prime Minister Nikolai Tanayev, government officials and regional administrations participated in the meeting. President Akayev told the gathering that it is important to set up a project for the development of the mountainous regions in the country. The Prime Minister praised the activities of the Government in organizing the Year of the Mountain in the United Nations’ framework, saying that Kyrgyzstan was a leading mountainous country in carrying out events connected with the Year of the Mountain Year. Tanayev added that Kyrgyzstan will organize the Second Global Mountain summit in 2005.
President Akayev presented State Secretary Osmonakun Ibraimov, Prime Minister Tanayev, and the Chairman of the National Organizing Committee for the Development of Mountainous Regions, Asylbek Aidaraliev with the Order of Manas.
During the gathering, President Akayev said that the forthcoming referendum set for February 2 to adopt a new version of the Constitution will demonstrate that Kyrgyzstan is a country that respect human rights. According to him, the adoption of the new version of the Main Law will strengthen Kyrgyzstan's path to democracy and maintain the development of civil society in the country.
