BISHKEK. Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev today delivered his annual address to the Kyrgyz parliament and the nation at the joint session of the People's Representative Assembly and the Legislative Assembly of Jogorku Kengesh (both chambers of the parliament). His speech was centered on issues surrounding strengthening democratic reforms and economic development following the adoption of the new version of the Kyrgyz constitution by a referendum held on February 2, this year. Akayev praised the new version of the main law as a safeguard for human rights and the democratic process.
Akayev also said the country needs to strengthen local governments and make further reforms to the court system.
In other developments, the Kyrgyz opposition yesterday distributed a statement calling for Akayev's resignation. The statement criticizes what it calls recent distortion in constitutional reforms and persecution of independent media.
