BISHKEK. President Askar Akayev today chaired a meeting devoted to, as its organizers put it, 'maintaining democratic security'. Participants of the meeting established a body called 'Public Council For Democratic Security'. The council consists of 29 members, including its chairman, an ethnic Uzbek and academician Mirsaid Mirrakhimov and other politicians, such as First Deputy Prime Minister, Kurmanbek Osmonov, and a judge of the Constitutional court, Jumakadyr Tagaibayev. The council's aim is to prepare a draft Democratic code which will be discussed at the forthcoming gathering, the Congress (Kurultai) of Kyrgyzstan Peoples, set for March 6.
The gathering is expected to unite several political parties, NGOs and senior residents of all regions of the country. Some opposition parties refused to participate in the congress, but some moderate opposition politicians have not yet decided whether they will attend or not.
