BISHKEK. Ysman Babatayev, a public aide of an opposition MP, Azimbek Beknazarov, was beaten today in the town of Maily-Suu by unknown people. According to his associates, Babatayev was one of the local residents openly criticizing the military court verdict on the officials charged in connection with the events on March 17-18, 2002, when police shot dead five protesters in the Aksy district of the Jalal-Abad region. The Osh military court hearing ended in Maily- Suu town on December 28, 2002. Both plaintiffs and defendants were unhappy with the court hearing's procedural shortcomings.
