BISHKEK. President Askar Akayev appealed to Kyrgyzstanis to be united in his New Year speech broadcast on the eve of the New Year. He said that the government has begun realizing the idea entitled 'Kyrgyzstan is a country of human rights'. He said that internal disturbances would not create any chances for strengthening the ongoing democratic processes. The New Year celebrations were held in peace, without any major violations of the law. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the registered crimes in the country were less than in an ordinary day. The New Years name in Kyrgyz is 'Koi Jyly' (the Sheep's Year) according to the traditional Turkic calendar with a 12-year-cycle system.
