The Chairman of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), Sulaiman Imanbaev, told RFERL today that Kyrgyzstanis are not going to adopt a new
Constitution at the forthcoming referendum. It will be just a new version of the current Main Law, adopted in accordance with the contemporary developments in the post-Soviet society. Imanbaev backed the President's right to wrap-up all
the proposals made during the nation-wide debate and to suggest an united draft to the nation.
Meanwhile, the CEC made a statement today, rejecting the accusations of some opposition deputies who said that the forthcoming referendum on adopting a new version of the Constitution was illegal. The CEC stressed that a law entitled 'On
Implementing the Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic' adopted on May 5, 1993, is still in force and it covers the issues of holding referenda.
