Kyrgyz Prime Minister To Participate at the CIS Summit In Kyiv; President Visits Ysykkul region

BISHKEK. Kyrgyz Prime Minister Nikolai Tanayev today arrived in Kyiv to participate at the CIS summit in the Ukrainian capital. This informal meeting is expected to bring together six other presidents -- from Belarus, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Georgia, Tajikistan and Armenia -- as well as top envoys from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
Kyrgyz President A. Akayev did not participate at the summit due to the forthcoming referendum. The second issue of the referendum is about a vote of confidence for the president, as he put it yesterday at the meeting with Kyrgyz businessmen in Bishkek: 'The whole year the opposition made a fuss, and collected signatories in all the regions (of Kyrgyzstan), appealing "Let's remove Akayev from his position". Now, when I met their demands and announced (a plebiscite) on a vote of confidence, and put the issue as a second question (in the referendum agenda), they (Kyrgyz opposition) say: 'No, don't organize the referendum! We don't need the second question. It is the President who wants derive for himself some benefit from it', the President said.
Akayev today visited Ysykkul region and called its residents to support the Government-backed draft version of the Constitution.
