Election to a Parliament Seat and Run-Offs To Be Held In the South

BISHKEK. There will be an election in the No 30 Karasuu constituency on May 11, 2003. A former lawmaker elected from the constituency, Tursunbay Bakir-uulu, was elected to the newly established position of Ombudsman on November 2002. The Central Election Commission told journalists today that the run-offs from the No 36 'Osh-3000' constituency will be held on February 16. A department head of the Transportation and communication ministry, Mamasadyk Bakirov, and a vice-rector of the Osh state university, Mukhtar Orozbekov are competing with each other for a lawmaker's place.
Meanwhile, the run-off for the disputed No 33 Karakulja constituency has not been set yet. About 250 residents of the constituency today gathered in Karakulja village. They protested against the delay in the run-offs and demanded authorities to allow an opposition politician, Usen Sydykov, to participate in them.
Sydykov, former deputy prime minister, was barred from the run-offs by the authorities, as they put it, for several irregularities in documentation. Sydykov rejected the court verdicts on barring him as unjust.
