BISHKEK. Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev today signed a law on the new version of the Kyrgyz constitution adopted by the recent referendum. Earlier today, there was a ceremony of hoisting the national flag at the central 'Alatoo' square. President Askar Akayev said during the signing ceremony that in the new version of the Main law, Kyrgyzstan has taken into account social practice of both the international community and Kyrgyz society during the constitutional reforms. He urged the Kyrgyzstanis to implement the constitution which had been praised by the President as the main law of post-transition (i.e. democratic) society. Leaders of the Kyrgyz opposition refused to participate in the ceremony, criticizing the Government, as they put it, for forging the results of the referendum on February 2, 2003.
