Human Rights Campaigner Baisalov Still Detained In Military Hospital

BISHKEK. President of the Coalition for Democracy and Civil Society (Kyrgyzstan), Edil Baisalov, is still in a military hospital in the village of Beshkuengei of the Alamueduen district in the Chui region, near Bishkek. Baisalov told RFE/RL today that an eye-specialist, Dr. Asira Sartova has confirmed the previous diagnosis that Baisalov cannot serve in compulsory military service. However, hospital authorities are waiting for permission by the chairperson of the Republican military health commission, Svetlana Umetalieva, to release Baisalov from the hospital.
A spokesman of the Defense ministry, Mirbek Koilubaev told RFE/RL that there is no political reason for the forced hospitalization of Baisalov. He has been pursued by military authorities since July 2000. He was forced to go through the hospital's check-up procedures in accordance with the law on military duty, Koilubaev said.
Baisalov was forced to go to the military hospital on February 28, the day he was supposed to participate at a round table with a speech criticizing human rights abuses in the country.
About 15 NGOs of Jalalabad region today appealed to the President and Ombudsman demanding to free Baisalov from the military hospital and to bring to justice those responsible military officials who ordered to detain him.
