BISHKEK. The representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Daan Everts, started today his two-day visit in Kyrgyzstan. He met with President Askar Akayev, foreign minister Askar Aitmatov, the speaker of the Legislative Assembly (lower chamber) of the Kyrgyz parliament, Abdygany Erkebaev, and an opposition politician, lawmaker Adahan Madumarov. Everts discussed with the Kyrgyz politicians the current political situation in the country, directions of cooperation between the OSCE and Kyrgyzstan and other regional issues.
Everts will participate at the international seminar on problems of economy and fighting drug trafficking. The workshop will be held on March 16 in Tashkent.
In the meantime, The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Netherlands Foreign Minister Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, has appointed the former President of Finland, Martti Ahtisaari, as his personal envoy for the Central Asian region. This region consists of five countries, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, which are all members of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
