BISHKEK. Bishkek police today detained Tyntchtyk Duulatov, a member of the Political Council of the opposition "Arnamys" ("Dignity) Party. The head of the party's headquarters, Emil Aliev, told RFE/RL that the law-enforcement bodies detained Duulatov in connection with a so-called "hostage taking attempt" on the day of the constitutional referendum, earlier this year. Some members of the Kyrgyz opposition caught a man, accusing him, as they alleged, "for casting illegal votes" in the Bishkek constituencies. The Bishkek police began a criminal case against the detainment attempt during the vote. Zoia Kojobekova, responsible for an investigation of the case, today refused to comment on the detainment of Duulatov.
