BISHKEK. President Askar Akayev signed a decree on the appointment of Chubak Abyshkaev, the former Prosecutor General, to a position of the head of the Chui regional court. Abyshkaev was released of his prosecutor's position last year in connection with the poor performance in the investigation of the Aksy tragedy. The Kyrgyz opposition has been criticizing Abyshkaev as one of the officials allegedly involved in ordering shootings of the peaceful demonstrators in the Aksy district of the Jalalabad region. Police shot dead five protesters during their anti-government gathering on March 17-18, 2002. Abyshkaev had denied any wrongdoing.
